"Vayne man said she..."- Explain.

This line is quoted from the poem 'One Day I Wrote Her Name' written by Edmund Spenser. The lady-love criticizes the poet unsuccessfully attempting to immortalize her name on the sandy shore of the sea as a foolish man.

'Vayne man' means proud man- a man who can not be stopped from attempting even the impossible. The attempt of the poet to immortalize her lady-love's name was criticized because he was trying to write the name of his beloved permanently on the sea shore and the waves would wash away the name. His lady-love said that no mortal things would be brought beyond the reach of death and decay. Her name would be obliterated altogether from the mortal world.

In the mortal world, all earthly objects and characters are mortal. Nothing can be immortalized. So his every attempt has been thwarted by the surge of waves. He is ultimately chastised by his lady-love who addressed his as 'vain' for her lover revolts against the laws of Nature.
