Comparative study between America and Europe in "Nationalism"

Rabindranath Tagore in his essay "Nationalism" asserts that America is "the country of expectation". In making human unity and solving the national problem i. e. ' the race problem' only America has the ability.

Going to prove his assertion, Rabindranath makes a comparative study of Europe and America. He says, "Europe has her subtle habits of mind and her conventions." But "America.......has come to no conclusions." America should give the lead, because it has no troubled past - "America is untramelled by the traditions of the past, and I can appreciate that experimentalism is a sign of America's youth." Tagore also says that if you have a power to see the future, you must love America because it has a bright future - "If one is gifted with the power of clairvoyance, one will be able to love the America that is to be."

"Europe has lost faith in humanity and has become distrustful and sickly." But America is optimistic, "not pessimistic or blase." Europe has some habits which are 'aggressively arrogant'. They are compared with 'hedges of stinging nettles'.  Tagore means to say that if one is proud of his or her culture, tradition, this is fine, but if one has the sense of superiority and thinks others as inferior, people become angry with him or her. Because no one has the right to humiliate the other. Europe is always thinks that East has nothing to offer, because she is always proud of her past - "she takes every opportunity to hurl this fact against others to humiliate them."

Not only that, but America also never make any country it's colony, though European country made other country its colony.  In the point of colonization America also surpasses America.

"There is only one history- the history of man"

This prophetic remark is made by Rabindranath Tagore in his lectures which have been later published as an essay, called "Nationalism". Rabindranath is of the opinion that the condition of the whole world is similar as India's - "What India has been, the whole world is now." Here Rabindranath mainly speaks racial problem of world.

Rabindranath has a hope that India "has tried to make an adjustment of races" through the 'basis of unity' and this unity "has come through our saints like Nanak, Chaitanya and others, preaching one God to all races of India." If India can find any solution to this problem and if "India can offer to the world her solution, it will be a contribution to humanity." Actually to Rabindranath all nations are the same, he is only aware of the unity of man, humanity of man - "There is only one history - the history of man." Here Rabindranath paints a global villege in India to show all the nations.

This remark proves Jawharlal Nehru's comment true - he is the "great humanist of India." He also says about him - "India's internationalist par excellence, believing and working for international co-operation, taking India's message to other countries and bringing their message to his own people." Dorothy Norman also rightly remarks, "Tagore was essentially a person of international mould and thinking."

"Our real problem in India is not political"

This line has been taken from Rabindranath Tagore's "Nationalism". He was one of the greatest intellects of India, poets, writers, educationists, and India's "conscience keeper". In this essay he gives his idea about nation which is a broad and problematic concept.

The problem of Indian nationalism, according to Tagore, was that of race which was a social, not a political problem - " Our real problem in India is not political. It is social." He also says that this is not only India's problem, rather the problem "among all nations". Rabindranath says that our concept of nation is based on some western ideas like conflict, aggression, dominion. But Rabindranath is of the opinion that we have to remember that our culture and European culture are completely different. They have 'racial unity' and their 'natural resources' are not sufficient , so they have such type of "political and commercial aggressiveness". But out India is physically and geographically rich, so that Mughals, British came to India and colonized it. So we have only one problem - " It is the race problem". And we have to solve it.

What Rabindranath is emphasizing here is the 'human unity'. He is not bothered by the political situation at all, he is only conscious of the 'internal complications' which we have in India. He gets also says that we must not follow European culture because they have a sense of superiority which always tried to dominate us and this is not favourable future of India.
