What is the distinction between a learned man and an experienced man according to Bacon?
According to Bacon there is a distinction between a learned man and an experienced man, for the former will far better in his field of expertise. Studies provide a man with knowledge but seldom tell how to use them. Knowledge by itself tends to be vagued and abstract unless it is trimmed by experience. So when knowledge is tempered by experience of a wise man, the desired result is got.
Who are Cyminisectores?
It is a Latin term meaning experts in hair splitting. This term has been used by Bacon to denote those persons who have the capacity of differentiating and distinguishing things, similar to philosophers of middle ages. In 'Of Studies', Bacon suggests that if a man is unable to easily differentiate between things, he should study the works of the philosophers of the middle ages. It is worth noting that in almost all his essays Bacon has used similar Latin uses which are pointer to his hold over Latin.
Explain: "some books are to be tasted others to be swallowed and some few to be chewed and digested."
In this extract from Bacon's 'Of Studies', Bacon says that all books in the world do not deserve equal number of attention of its readers. He classifies books into three groups, the first which are to be read in parts only and not in detail. Second, there are some books which should be read from cover to cover and do not deserve mindful studies. It is the third type, of which there is a small number which deserve to be read thoroughly and diligently as they provide matter which can enrich the readers with their wisdom and knowledge.
