Addison's writing
Essays and poems
Write a note on Addison's writing.
Addison is a big name in the history of the 18th century literature. He has written many essays as well as poems. The most celebrating of his works are his Essays which are collected from the "Tatler and Spectator". Though the 18the century was the time of realism and materialism, Addison spoke about the simplicity and refreshment. He talks about the vices and vanities of the then people, but in a simpler, kinder and gentle way. So that people would not feel hopeless, rather they could change their way of living. He has a great knowledge of life and a greater faith on it. In his writing, it is clearly visible.
Addison has also written some poems. His "Cato" is a great example of rhetorical device and that's why it is considered as one of the finest example of his rhetorical writing, though as a tragedy it doesn't attract our attention. His other important poems are- "Traveller's Hymn", "God in Nature", "Continued Help" etc.
