 * Kate Chopin is popularly considered as the forerunner of the feminist authors of the 20th century.

* She was born in 1851 and died in 1904.

* She is famous for her short stories and novels.

* Feminism, sensuality and race are the three important themes of her writings.

*Her most important writings are-

1. The Desirees Baby(1892)

2. The Story of an Hour (1894)

3. The Storm (1898)

4. The Awakening (1899)


* The Awakening:-

Setting of the story is in New Orleans and South Louisiana. The main character of this novel is Edna Pontellier. The novel is all about motherhood, but scandalous relationships are also highlighted here. The three important feminist points which are emphasized here are--i) not every woman is made to be a mother, ii) many women will not feel happy in the golden cage, iii) stress on sex and sexuality. Motto of the book is "Power is the gown of all relationships." Many symbols are used in this novel to make it more interesting. One of them is getting into the water is used here as the symbol of sexuality.
