Critical appreciation of the poem, "First Spring Morning" by Robert Bridges.
"First Spring Morning" is a very beautiful poem by Robert Bridges which was published in the Book V of "The Shorter Poems of Robert Bridges" in 1863. The poem is all about the happiness and merriment of the poet in the time of spring. The name of the poem is quite suggestive of the theme of it. The poet is very glad to see the 1st morning of the spring.
The poet here in a very minute way discusses the incidents and actions happened in spring time. The poet says that he can feel the gentle calm air of the spring time. The birds are singing and chirping because they can fly now in the 'unclouded' sky. This term 'unclouded' is suggesting that before the coming of the spring, it was raining for sometime. However, now the birds are happy to see the unclouded bright sun.
In the 2nd paragraph, the poet more clearly expresses how happy everybody was with the coming spring. The children are playing and dancing in the meadows, they are collecting different kinds of flowers which are available during this time like primroses, bluebells, oxlips etc.
The last paragraph is all about the innocent mischief doing by the children. The woodman is cutting woods beside his "Willow hut" and the children are planning to make him terrified by hiding behind his hut. Not only that, they also want to sing Happy song after doing this naughtiness. Here it is clearly shown how innocent and pure they are.
The whole poem is written in a light-hearted manner. Nothing is serious. But the poem is completely rhythmic in its own way. The poet uses many alliteration here to give the poem a beautiful structure. He usese the phrase like "blades of bluebells" and "boughs to burst" etc. The language of the poem is quite simple and straight forward.
Summary and central theme of the poem, "What is Pink" by Christina Rossetti.
If we read the poem, it seems like it's a very easy and funny poem which only talks about different colours and their examples. Though it's a kind of nursery poem, but it has a deep meaning inside it. The poet here wants to show us how beautifully God has created this world for us.
Everything in this world is created by the God and He also has put colours in every single object to make it more beautiful and attractive. He wants to give us a glimpse of heaven where we can go in our lifetime. So He makes this beautiful peaceful world for us.
Now comes to the literal summary of the poem. The poet here introduces various colours. In the very beginning, she talks about pink. For example, she says rose is pink in colour which we can find in the brink of edge of fountain. Then she talks about red. She says, poppy is beautiful for its red colour. It is found in the barley field. For introducing blue colour, the poet uses the easiest way, she says the sky is blue in colour where the clouds are always floating in their own wish. For white, she uses the example of swan which is completely white in colour when it is swimming on the water in the day light. Peers are yellow which are rich in vitamins and very tasty when riped. For the green colour, she uses the example from the mother nature, the grasses are green in colour and it looks more and more beautiful when there are flowers in between the grass. For introducing violet colour, the poet uses an unusual example, she says clouds are violet in colour. But of course the poet mentions a time. She says in the time of twilight, the clouds become violet because of the changing of the light as it is going to be dark from the daylight. At last the poet talks about the orange colour. But it is interesting to note that she does not use any other example but an orange. She says the fruit orange is the best example to describe the orange colour, why should we find any other example.
That's how the poet in a very simple, but effective way, presents a beautiful picture of the mother nature. It is also kind of tribute to the God who has created all these beautiful things.
