"Death touches the spring of our common humanity." Explain it.

 This beautiful sentence is extracted from T. S. Arthur's notable short story, "An Angel in Disguise". The line simply means that death is the only moment when everyone laments for the dead one. They don't think that where he was good or bad when he was alive. Here, in this story, the woman was hated and disliked by all the neighborhood when she was alive. But after her death, everybody is rushing towards her 'tumble - down hut' with 'grave clothes' for her and foods for her children. The neighbours are not showing any kind anger or condemnation now, rather pouring pity and sorrow for her and her children. The author here very beautifully portrays the human psychology through this heart-touching sentence.

Summary of the poem, "Butterfly Laughter" by Katherine Mansfield.

 The poem "Butterfly Laughter" by Katherine Mansfield shows the bitter-sweet relationship of a grandmother with her grandchildren. The grandmother is preparing the breakfast for her grandkids with beautiful decoration. She is making porridge for them on the top of which she has painted a blue-coloured butterfly to make it attractive, so that the children can enjoy it and quickly finish it. There is a competition among all the children to eat that butterfly fast. But the grandmother makes it with so much love and affection that she always says, "Do not eat the poor butterfly." The children don't understand her affection and it seems like 'sweet little joke' to them. And after listening to the grandmother's request, they start laughing. The poet seeing her grandmother's love for that butterfly is quite sure that one day that butterfly will be alive and fly from that porridge plate and will go to the grandmother's lap to get more love and affection.

The poem is a very colourful and happy poem the young readers. Here the poet tries to make a difference between the old and young generation, where the old ones are very caring, affectionate and try to protect everything, the young ones are very jolly, fun-loving and also unaware of the feelings like affection and love, care etc. Though the poem doesn't have any rhyming words at the end of the lines, but it gives a rhythmic effect normally with its beautiful words and simplicity.

Summary of the poem, "The Wind" by Robert Louis Stevenson.

 "The Wind" by Robert Louis Stevenson is a very beautiful and interesting poem. Hete the poet is sharing his experience of his childhood. The poet is describing the activities of the wind as well as he is complaining against it and also he is asking few questions to him.

  The first Stanza:

" I saw you toss the kites on high

And blow the birds about the sky;

And all around I heard you pass,

Like ladies' skirts across the grass,

O wind, a-blowing all day long,

O wind, that sings so loud a song!"

In this para, the poet is describing the activities of the wind. He is telling that the kites are moving on the sky because wind and the birds are so flying high in the sky because of the wind's blow. The poet also can hear the sound of the wind when it is passing. Here he uses a simile. He says that when the girls' skirts are touched with the grass, a sound is made which is quite similar with the sound of the wind. He is also telling that the wind blowing all throughout the day and its sound seems like a loud song.

The Second Stanza:

"I saw the different things you did,

But always you yourself you hid.

I felt you push, I heard you ,

I could not see yourself at all.

O wind, a-blowing all day long,

O wind, that sings so loud a song!"

In this stanza, the poet is complaining against the wind as the poet can't see it. It is invisible. The poet can feel that the wind is pushing him. He can also hear its call. But he is not able to see it. So he is disappointed and making complaints. At the end of this stanza, again he is repiting the same lines once again to emphasize on the heavy blow of the wind.

The third Stanza:

"O you that are so strong and cold,

O blower, are you young or old?

Are you a beast of field and tree,

Or just a stronger child than me?

O wind, a-blowing all day long,

O wind, that sings so loud a song!"

The poet as a child has a lot of questions in his mind. In this stanza poet is curious to know about it. He tells that the wind is very strong as it has the capability to push somebody. The poet also feels coldness of the wind. But he is confused whether the wind is young or old. He also wants to know if the wind is a beast who can damage the field and destroy the trees. He is also confused about the wind's age. He wants to know if it a child who is stronger than the poet. Finally the poet again repeats the same two lines to emphasize the force of the wind and ends his poem.

The poem is completely rhythmic. The poet uses the rhyme like aa bb cc, dd ee cc, ff gg cc. The poet also uses the figures of speech like simile, personification and hyperbaton. The simple language and the rhythmic effect make this poem more beautiful and pleasant for our ear.

Summary of the story "The Selfish Giant" by Oscar Wilde.

 "The Selfish Giant" by Oscar Wilde is a story of a giant who was very selfish and rude. He did not like the children at all. When the giant went to meet his friend Cornish Ogre for seven years, the children enjoyed the beauty of the giant's garden. They used to play there after their school's end.

The garden was very beautiful. It was full of soft green grass with beautiful flowers which looked like 'stars'. In the garden, there were twelve peach trees also which were covered with flowers in the autumn season. All was beautiful and gorgeous until the giant came back.

One day, the giant came back and saw that the children were playing in his garden. So he became very angry and scolded them and got them out from his garden. He always wanted to enjoy the beauty of his garden alone. Now the children were very sad and disheartened because they didn't have any place to play. They tried to play on the road, but it was full of stones and not suitable for playing. So they just sighed that how happy they had been there in that garden.

But the giant was so much selfish that he had built a high wall around the garden and put a notice board up. On that notice board,it was written that "TRESPASSERS WILL BE PROSECUTED".

When all around the country spring came, the giant's garden was full of snow as winter was still there. Spring did not want to come here as the giant had not allowed the children to come in. So, the Frost, the Hail, the Snow and the North Wind were enjoying. They thought that they could enjoy the place through out the year, as spring was not coming there.

Now the giant became tensed. He was thinking about the reason that why spring was not coming. He consoled himself that it might be late, but it must come. But Spring never came.

One day, the giant was lying on his bed and suddenly he heard the sound of a music. He thought that king's musicians were singing the song. But later he realised that it was a little linnet. He was surprised. He saw that the children entered into the garden through a little hole of the wall. With the children spring also came. The whole garden looked beautiful with beautiful fresh flowers and with the sound of chirping birds.

But he saw that in the one corner of the garden, winter was still there because the little boy could not climb up the tree. He was crying a lot. The tree was bending its branch so that he could climb, but he couldn't. Because he was too tiny to climb. The giant saw that and his heart was melted. He came to that corner to help him. But when the other children saw him, they escaped. But that little child could not see him. So he came to him and helped him to climb up the tree. When the other children saw that the giant was not bad anymore ,they entered into the garden again and spring also came with them. The giant broke the wall down. He told them that it had been their garden from then.

Summary of the poem, "Rain in Summer" by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.

Summary of the poem Rain in Summer:

In this poem the poet wants to show his excitement and the happiness when the rain comes after a long Summer time. Here we can say through the poet's happiness, the happiness of nature and all the human beings and animals are expressed. The poem becomes universal in it's thought and the theme.
   In the very 1st paragraph of the poem, the poet welcomes rain and describes how it is falling in every place. To the rain, there is no boundary and difference between a narrow Lane and a broad street. Actually it is not partial to any thing. It is giving pleasure to each and everyone of the universe. Because of the heat of the Summer, all the streets are become fiery and hot, and after a long time when rain come it becomes very "beautiful" and pleasant. That's why, the poet emphasizes on the line, "How beautiful is the rain!"

   In the second paragraph, the poet elaborates the sound of the rain. When it is falling down, it sounds like the hoofs of the horse. Not only that, as it is a heavy rain, it looks like that it is struggling to coming out from spout. In the next paragraph he is continuing describing the sound and the movement of the rain. He says, when it is falling across the window pane, it is quite "swift Swift and Wide" and the water is completely muddy and when it is flowing through the gutter, it looks like a stream:
   "With a muddy tide,
    Like a river down the gutter roars...."

   In the last paragraph, the poet describes how pleasant and comfortable this rain is to the sick people who are compelled to stay in their for their health. He can feel the pleasure of the rain, he can see the "twisted Brooks". Though he is ill from inside, he can feel the calmness of the rain inside out.

   The basic idea of the poem is that after a long, hot weather, rain is like a blessing. It can create a soothing effect even on a sick person. Everything is getting calm and everybody is feeling the pleasure of the rain.

Short Questions and answer from "O Captain! My Captain".

1. "O Captain! My Captain! our fearful trip is done;

The ship has weathered every rack, the prize we sought is won;

The port is near, the bells I hear, the people all exulting"

a) Who is the persona?

Ans. The poet himself is the persona here.

b) Who is the persona addressing here?

Ans. The great Captain Abraham Lincoln is the persona addressing here.

c) Who is exulting and where are they?

Ans. The common mass who are eagerly waiting for the Captain to return for his "fearful trip", are exulting upon the port.

2. "My Captain does not answer, his lips are pale and still;

My father does not feel my arm, he has no pulse nor will;"

a) What is the relationship between the captain and the persona?

Ans. There is no personal relationship between them. The captain is here the American President Abraham Lincoln and the persona is the poet, who is just a common people of Lincoln's state. Even these two never meet with each other.

b) Why does the captain not answer?

Ans. The captain does not answer because he is no more. He is assassinated in 1865 after the American Civil War.

c)What words would you use to describe the mood of these lines?

Ans. These lines reflect the tragic mood of the persona. The words like "pale", " still", "does not feel", " no pulse", "nor will" describe the mood of the lines.

3. Contrast the mood on the shore to the mood on the ship.

Ans. In the poem, "O Captain! My Captain!", the two different moods are described very clearly. The mood on the shore is completely different from the mood on the ship. The people on the shore are exultiny, eagerly waiting for the return of the Captain from the fearful voyage. They decorated the shore with flowers, palys music with the use of trumpet and all.

On the other hand, the ship is gloomy and mournful. The captain lies dead, there is no sound, no voice .....only the crying is heard. The deck is becoming red with blood.

  4.Which is the most often repeated phrase in the second stanza of the poem? What effect does the poet wish to create through this repetition.

Ans.    The most often repeated phrase in the second stanza of the poem is " for you".

The poet Walt Whitman wishes to create a fantastic though mournful scenario to pay a homage to the great American Presiden,  who was put to death in 1865.
